Frequently Asked Questions
Got Questions? We Have Answers.
Browse through our most common consumer queries about working with Advantage Insurance Advisors.
Does it cost anything to work with Advantage Insurance Advisors?
No. Our Medicare counseling and enrollment assistance is free for beneficiaries. We are paid by insurance carriers when you enroll in a plan — you never pay us a fee for our help.
If your services are free, how does Advantage Insurance Advisors get paid?
Licensed health insurance agents may be compensated by health plans when you enroll. We take pride in a non-biased, client-first approach — there is absolutely no obligation to enroll and no pressure.
What is the Initial Coverage Election Period (ICEP)?
Your ICEP is generally the 7-month window around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before, the month you turn 65, and the 3 months after. This is often the best time to enroll in Medicare and choose supplemental or Advantage coverage without medical underwriting on Medigap in many states.
What is the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)?
AEP runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, or return to Original Medicare. Changes take effect January 1.
How soon can my Medicare coverage begin after I enroll?
Coverage generally begins on the first day of the month after enrollment. For new beneficiaries enrolling during the Initial Coverage Election Period (ICEP), the start date is shown on your Medicare card.
Why can't you tell me my plan benefits over the phone before an appointment?
We are happy to answer your questions, but CMS requires a Scope of Appointment (SOA) before an agent can discuss specific insurance products and plan details with you. This protects you and keeps appointments compliant.
What is a Scope of Appointment (SOA)?
Before we discuss specific plan options, federal regulations require a Scope of Appointment — a brief form documenting which product types you agree to hear about (e.g., Medicare Advantage, Part D, Medigap). This protects you and ensures compliant sales practices.
Can I keep my doctor?
It depends on the plan. Original Medicare with any accepting provider offers the broadest choice. Medicare Advantage plans use networks — we verify whether your doctors and hospitals participate before you enroll.
What if I am still working at 65?
You may be able to delay Part B if you have creditable employer coverage. We review your situation so you avoid late-enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage.
Do you offer every plan in my area?
No. We represent multiple carriers but not every plan available. For a complete list of options, contact Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 711).
